The first foals has been born

The first foals of 2025 have been born! How happy we are to have had 3 healthy foals.

On 29 January, we were surprised in the barn in the morning. A healthy filly by Menso 542 stood next to Bonita van Zomerstaete (Hessel 480) looking at us happily. 2 weeks early and without any announcement but fortunately mother and daughter are in perfect health. This foal was named Evita van Zomerstaete.

Driske and Sjitske (mother and daughter) were next. Driske was due on 15 February and Sjitske on 28 February. A few days before the actual birth, we saw both Sjitske’s and Driske’s udder that something was about to arrive. For Driske, this meant she was a few days early but for Sjitske it meant 3 weeks and we always find this rather early. And they wouldn’t give birth in the same night, would they? Of course, that chance is extremely small especially given the considerable difference in their due dates. But on 9 February in the afternoon, both mares had milk on their nipples. Could it be that they both gave birth tonight? At 22.30 the first alarm went off, it was Sjitske who gave us a beautiful colt. A prosperous birth and some uneasiness as it was her first foal but both made it well. Driske was still eating quietly and not much was going on yet so we went to bed at 01.30. But at 2.30am, the alarm rang again and the speedy Driske already had her foal behind her. So both mother and daughter gave birth to a colt on the same night. Sjitske her foal is a Mans 543 x Tiede 501 and his name is: Doe mij die maar van Zomerstaete. Driske’s deluxe colt is an Arent 515 x Onne 376 and his name is Deluxe van Zomerstaete.

We are expecting the next foals in March, these are the NMRPS mini horses Liara and Naila and the Friesian Star mare Ayu van Zomerstaete x Jeroen 535.
